Sucked In
Of late I have been getting sucked into various projects and meetings that in all honesty I see as going nowhere. There seems to be an ask on time without any plan or target in mind. I have taken part in these projects and meetings knowing very well that I would be doing a minimal value addition if any. It’s disruptive to my long term goal and plan and has also been disruptive to my defined daily and weekly routine. All that is accomplished is a sense of mental fatigue and exhaustion.
It is so easy to get trapped and sucked into things that have no outcome at the same time you will be busy as hell. Thought a lot about it and figured that the only way to overcome this rut is to break the cycle, force myself for a start back into what was an enjoyable daily and weekly personal routine. This way on a daily and weekly basis I can look back on some sense of accomplishment. Getting out is difficult but possible. Further thinking earned me a question ; why do we get stuck in a rut ?
The standard answer for getting stuck in a rut is lack of energy to make a change. The lack of energy exits because mentally one is in pain feeling very disheartened. The mental state is because as an individual we all want to achieve something, and here we are, absolutely downcast. My approach is one that a lot of people recommend and has also been written about by psychologists. There is however one more approach that borrows from nature. Be like the tree that fruits only in a certain season or like water in a stream that finds itself flowing into a few rocks. With the later analogy my way is the way of the young river pushing and cutting through at the same time showcasing massive and fantastic rapids. The river is wild and one could not ride that river without risk. The way of the tree is logically better there is minimal risk; but you need to accept that it would take a longer time. I got tired of waiting.
How do you manage a rut ?
