Through a tots eyes

Ever notice a baby’s eyes ? They say eyes are a gateway to one’s soul; and if that be true then, a baby’s eyes more often than not will show you nothing but the sense of wonderment. The soul I guess could then be considered as an extension of the universe or maybe it’s the other way around. The wonderment comes from the raw experience of the universe without any labels and without any bias. As the baby grows older and starts to label things it experiences the wonderment tends to change to a routine. This process continues even into adulthood. It’s in adulthood that the sameness and the repetitive nature of life that one starts to question the futility of the situation.

Stoicism, Taoism, Buddhism, some modern philosophers all say essentially the same thing to try and explain the futile nature of life and that is; to essentially drop longing, desire, etc of things that are not in your control and to only express this in areas where you are in total control. When one’s thinks of this hard and long enough you see that this too is futile and that what one is really missing is the joy derived from the wonderment first experienced as a tiny tot that did not know how to speak.

We all get caught up in our day to day life’s so much that the only time we think of change is when we get a little restless with the mundane repetitive nature of what we are doing. Not all do; some resign to the idea that this is it and nothing will change the situation and find solace in the previous said philosophical constructs. For the ones that push forward in their own eyes, the surprising thing is that they don’t really change but believe that a choice this way or the other will cause the necessary change. It’s the basic reason why people change jobs or try new ventures (yes you may get a better pay, a promotion even ; but the reality is you wanted out from the mundane). A new job or a new venture looks promising at first but very quickly the same feeling of repetitiveness comes around and you are back to where you began. Alone, lost maybe and with no clue. Maybe it’s better then to see the universe through the eyes of a baby. There is wonder and joy in everything. Like my favourite comic book character tells his best pal “it’s a magical world Hobbes old buddy let’s go exploring”

  1. Absolutely, we loose the wondering eye as we grow old and archive the experiences by learnings...I think we can regain the wondering eye if we can unlearn the experiences to see the life as a fresh one from a new window( eye).
