Bias Part 2

If you did the mind exercise from the last post then read ahead if not I recommend that you go back one post and do the mind exercise else this short post will not make sense.

Now that one has identified a bunch of traits that are easy to identify as biases one has let’s flip the story a bit and try to identify biases or behaviour patterns that are not so apparent. With the same list of hero’s; now list down the criticism that the hero faces. Again go through the list and find the common threads. Surprised!? I am almost a 100% certain that these very adjectives have been used in the context of your own behaviour. You should not be surprised. If your hero’s behaviour is something that you would like to emulate then the chances are that the biases are by default emulated.

It is our behaviour and our own bias and has been looked at by an observer who has commented on that behaviour based on their own bias. The adjectives you discovered in this short exercise are true for a particular society and situation. The hidden behaviour traits that each of us carry sometimes become a liability. Understanding the impact of these hidden traits will help one to grow. There are more biases that need to be discovered with more work; but if one can discover the predominant biases it’s almost 90% knowledge about our own behaviour which is good enough to make lasting changes if one so desires.
