Perfection ?
I wrote about excellence and perfection some time ago; was not happy with the finished product (I.e the post) but have decided to approach the subject again with a post on perfection. Maybe it would help clear up some concepts and also would help me when I revisit the subject.
Perfection in most definitions is a drive that someone has to strive for flawlessness. It is accompanied by critical self-evaluations and concerns regarding others' evaluations. Herein is the issue - the scale for being perfect could by yours or could be subjects or could be based on others. The evaluation that one does is on a scale that is essentially not real nor has been accepted by both the evaluator or the evaluatee. Tough when you are both the evaluator and the eavluatee at the same time; imagine trying to measure against a notional scale. I wonder with these psychological issues what is it that drives people to try to achieve perfection ? It makes sense to strive for excellence and not perfection in all circumstances. Perfectionism drives people to achieving unattainable ideals or unrealistic goals. When you act and measure your actions against a scale which is both imaginary and unattainable the end result is going to be a bunch of negative emotions. Depression, stress, anxiety, panic are just a few end results of try to do something that is impossible.
No one was ever prefect - perfection is based on a scale that differs for everyone. My perfect blue is probably your worst blue. Excellence on the other hand is being as good as possible within your current skills. As always I strive to be excellent. In the immortal words of bill and ted (I have referenced this line in other posts) be excellent to each other. I cannot be the perfect husband, dad, Brother, son , friend, boss, etc but can for sure strive to be the most excellent. That is a huge difference.

Perfection is a mirage , which everyone strives to catch
